—That awesome genuine leather smell

The backstory—

In June 2018, I visited Budapest, Hungary for the first time and fell in love with the gothic city and its richly layered culture. Hungarians are historically renowned for their leatherwork. While browsing their Saturday tent market along the Danube River, I spotted this bag across the crowded plaza—my soulmate accessory I’d been looking for my entire life. I’d owned PU “cosplay” versions before that were never big enough for my phone, let alone anything else, and fell apart within months. But this was high quality Italian leather chosen and handmade by László here. He designs and sews many styles of leather handbags, purses, and attaches, but this was the one I’d dreamed of.

The compliments began the next morning, from a man in our tour group. They have continued for the last six years. Every single time I’m in public, men and women alike ask, “Where did you get that bag?” “You didn’t get that around here, did you?” And they are disappointed when I tell them they’d have to go to Eastern Europe.

Over the years, I ended up designing almost my entire casual wardrobe to go with this bag, and have stopped buying handbags. It’s a relief to not have something hanging on my neck/shoulders when I’m working or walking, or have to worry about where to set it or forgetting it somewhere. Not to mention, it’s really hard to steal. The leather has softened, remained durable, and the only repair it needed was replacing the original fine main zipper with a heavy-duty one. I am rough on my stuff.

After enough years of constant praise from strangers—in one morning at the Iowa State Capitol Building I clocked three compliments—I knew I had to somehow be able to sell this to Americans, even if it was just handing out a card when complimented. I already have enough business ventures, but the demand is clear!

I reached out to Laszlo but he’s a free spirit with little interest in mass selling or an online store. His outdoor markets in Europe are enough for him. After years of correspondence, we finally made it work. I told him I needed him to emboss his logo on the leather because I loved his three-headed Cerberus hellhound design logo (and every exclusive designer bag needs a logo on it!) And to use heavy duty zippers. He made these bags according to my specifications.
